Paint Monsters & Aliens | 2nd Baldock Scouts

Overview of Activity

Use your imagination to create monsters and aliens from paint blown across the paper.

Take your paint and, using the end of a spoon, toothbrush or toothpick, put drops of paint on your paper.
The paint may dry quickly so you need to move fairly fast to create the required effect.
Take your straw, and blow the paint across the paper.
If it looks odd, don’t worry! You can work that into your drawing!
Leave your paint to dry.
Once the paint is dried, the fun starts and you can start drawing.
Look at the shape of your paint, can you see hair? Can you see an outline of a face or body? Move your paper around to see if you can see it from different perspectives.
Take your googly eyes, or eye, and place them where you think the head of your monster is.
Now take your pencil and get creative.
Draw the outline of your monster, alien or person – whatever you can see.
Once you are happy with your drawing you can take a black fine liner or black pen and trace over your pencil drawing.

Hazard Identified/Risks from it?	Who is at risk?	How are risks already controlled? What extra controls are needed?
Craft equipment, Is it appropriate for the activity.	All	Check that the tools and equipment provided are in good enough condition, appropriate for the planned activity, and the right size for everyone taking part. For example, do scissors need to have pointed blades? Would a safer adhesive work? Should the task be done on a table? Is PPE (such as eye protection or gloves) required? Make sure there’s enough space between participants.
Glues and solvents, Inhalation or injuries from mistakes or misuse.	All	Ventilate the area appropriately during use and consider using outdoors if appropriate. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for use. Collect leftover glue, solvents, and other chemicals at the end of the activity. Supervise young people when they’re using solvents and glues. Adults brief young people on using the chemicals safely before use.
Sharp items, Injuries from mistakes or misuse.	All	Adult to supervise young people when they’re using sharp items. Brief young people on using the sharp item safely before they use it.
